South West Indoor Aquatic Centre

The campaign for a year-round indoor aquatic facility for the Southwest region of Adelaide commenced in the early 1990’s, as a result of the growing community recognition of a deficiency of indoor swimming/aquatic space in the face of increasing demand. Several working parties and action groups led the push for development of appropriate infrastructure for the Southwest, and their work included the preparation of preliminary plans and examination of funding options.

In the 1990's, several studies were undertaken which confirmed the need for such a facility in this metropolitan region. In 1997, the City of Marion committed $3 million towards developing an indoor swimming facility as a catalyst for finding other funding partners.

In February 1998, an Information Meeting for the general public was held, and arising from this meeting, a Committee was formed. In July 1998, this took the form of an incorporated independent body, the South West Indoor Aquatic Centre (SWIAC) Committee Inc. The Committee members include community and regional council representatives. The Strategic Plan of the Committee is to secure a significant year-round indoor aquatic facility for the South West region of metropolitan Adelaide and a major focus of the strategy is to promote awareness amongst the community, clubs, organizations and community leaders, and to actively promote, coordinate and undertake effective lobbying.

In May 2001 the Liberal State Government announced their commitment to a State level aquatic centre being built at Marion. In February 2004, the Labour State Government and the City of Marion announced a landmark agreement to enable the construction of a world-class indoor State Aquatic Centre, via a Public Private Partnership (PPP), at the Domain site in Marion.

SWIAC’s MISSION STATEMENT is:
"To secure the development of an international standard community and FINA compliant State indoor swimming centre in Marion."
