What is Marion Celebrates?
‘Marion Celebrates’ is a biennial community-based festival which celebrates the identity and cultural diversity of the Marion area. Five festivals have occurred to date, involving local groups and service organisations in performances, stalls, demonstrations, displays, art exhibitions, Sports Expo, bands, multicultural food festival, historic fair, BBQs and busking.

Past events have been held at the Marion Sports and Community Oval and the Domain, Marion, and have been linked to existing major attractions such as the 2000 Olympic Torch Relay and the 2002 Adelaide Fringe Festival and International ‘Sustaining Our Communities’ Conference. Marion Celebrates is the biggest community festival in the City of Marion. A one-day indoor and outdoor festival throughout the Marion Cultural Centre with the theme: Many Cultures, One Earth. Attendances have ranged from 3,000 – 15,000.

Marion Celebrates 2007 was held Sunday 1 April 2007, 11am to 5pm at Marion Cultural Centre.

The day featured an Art on the Move street parade from 11.30am – 12.30pm, with funky arty transport creations moving to a street beat.

Approximately 300 community members took part in the parade which travelled along Warracowie Way, Diagonal Road and through the Domain land. People stayed on to enjoy stalls, children’s activities, youth music event, community and professional performers, food, gallery exhibition, street party, skate park, mini golf, camels rides, Circotron and activities for everyone.

Art on the Move!
The Art on the Move street parade was the main focus for Marion Celebrates 2007.

Two artists worked with culturally diverse communities including Baha'i Marion, Hindu Temple, Filipino and Hamilton Secondary School Year 8 and Flato Unit to create artworks for the parade and Gallery M exhibition. The artwork was based on the theme of sustainable transport.

Art on the Move project is funded by Festivals Australia, An Australian Government Initiative, and the Government of South Australia through Arts SA.

Marion Celebrates Many Cultures One Earth 2005
Marion Celebrates 2005 built on previous festivals and maintained the popular theme Many Cultures, One Earth. The City’s biggest community event, it brought together professional and community performers as well as arts, crafts, original live youth music event and a dramatic street transformation on Sunday 13 March.

The Opening Ceremony consisted of a magnificent local schools parade of colourful creatures along Warracowie Way towards the Marion Cultural Centre. Over 100 children from Westminster, Seaview Downs, Darlington and Dover Gardens Primary created art work in the lead up to the event.

"The ambience, atmosphere and participation at Marion Celebrates was great!"
Rosie Tatnell

" We thoroughly enjoyed and were enriched by your wonderful Cultural Festival, it was a wonderful event"
Pat Sprague

Habitat project
The focal point of celebrations in 2005 was the colourful Habitat site and Habitat Forest Dome. Inside the dome you could lounge on hand-painted cushions, sip a Filipino melon drink or try on a sari, whilst in the surrounding courtyards different cultures mixed and mingled, shared food, music and stories.

The Habitat dome is now available for hire by schools, groups and others. It makes an ideal space for story-telling, a colourful centrepeice to an event or festival or an excellent cross-cultural educational resource.

Habitat was made possible by Festivals Australia, an Australian Government program which supports cultural activity at regional and community festivals and Arts SA through the South Australian Government.
