Marion is a 20-minute drive south-west of Adelaide offering easy access to a mix of ecological, cultural, sporting, leisure and shopping experiences. All this against a backdrop of hills, open space and the coast!
Marion’s coastline provides a stark contrast to the sandy beaches further north. At various points, a coastal walking trail takes hikers along rugged cliff-tops, through small coves and past important geological sites, including the world-renowned Hallett Cove Conservation Park and Marino Conservation Park.
This coastline features prominently in the Tjilbruke legend. To discover this ancient Kaurna Aboriginal story, go inland to the peaceful Warriparinga Reserve (bounded by Sturt, Marion and South Roads), where a self-guided tour meanders past the tranquil wetlands and symbolic art-orm that gives rise to the Dreamtime character, Tjilbruke and the area’s cultural significance.
A ‘must visit’ when in Marion is the Marion Cultural Centre. The merging of art and technology in the design has created a stunning landmark for all to enjoy. The Centre is home to the Marion Library, an A Class Arts Gallery and Signatures Café.
Marion also offers the chance to spend a day at the races. Horse races are held regularly at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville, and in May each year the course hosts the festive, five-day Adelaide Cup Carnival. On Cup Day, horse racing enthusiasts, fashion lovers and party goers come together to celebrate the state’s biggest race.
Golf enthusiasts shouldn’t miss out on a round at the scenic Marion Golf Park, and if you’re a cyclist, why not try the Sturt River Linear Park?
For many people a visit to Marion includes Westfield Marion Shopping Centre. In addition to being the state’s largest shopping centre it has become the hub of nightlife in the southwest with its pubs, restaurants and a mega-cinema complex. Marion is also becoming a drawcard for culinary buffs. Tucked away in back streets are two local favourites, Charlesworth Nuts and Pattriti Wines and with its superb coastal views and fare to match, the Marino Rocks Café Restaurant on the waterfront is earning itself a growing reputation.
