Mayor's Message

Welcome to the Mayor's Message column, which aims to keep you up-to-date with what is happening in the City of Marion.

The Mayor, Kris Hanna, is busy visiting the many community groups in our area, and meeting the people who make our city such a wonderful place in which to live.

This column allows Mayor Hanna to share these experiences and provide you with important information on a regular basis.

Mayor’s Message – June 2017

The ‘new’ Council has dramatically reshaped the culture at Marion in the 2 ½ years since we were elected.

I lead a team of Councillors that is united and has a real focus of delivering for the community.

At the same time, staff are now placing the customer first in all that they do while having a clear set of expectations in which to work.

No small measure of the changing culture is the amount of ratepayers’ money spent on investigating complaints of alleged misbehaviour involving staff and Elected Members.

Ideally, of course, we would not need to be spending any money.

However, the amount of money spent investigating Elected Members has been reduced from $46,200 in 2014/15 to $1854 so far in 2016/17.

During this same period, the amount spent on investigating staff has reduced by about three quarters – or $76,400 down to $19,600.

These are impressive results for any organisation and we strive to improve them even further.

Meantime, it demonstrates that when you get the culture right it can reduce the costs to the community.
