Councillors' views - Nick Westwood
Read the latest City Limits Magazine column by Councillor Nick Westwood.
Since the last issue of City Limits I have continued to join in welcoming new citizens at Citizenship Ceremonies. It’s a pleasure to see so many happy people starting on this chapter of their lives. Some have waited for many years before deciding to become a citizen, even though they have been living and working in Australia, sometimes up to around 65 years.
I have also attended breakfasts, lunches and dinners with various business and community groups, joined many at the opening of the Cove Civic Centre, and participated in too many events to list here.
Other than attending to various problems brought to my attention by residents, and others, my main aim is to contribute ideas and actions toward making our community a better place in which to live.
Most of our Councillors and I recognise the benefits of using ‘alternative energy’, so with this in mind, and the fact that we need more jobs in our community, I am leading a push to explore the possibility of dramatically increasing the use of electric vehicles in our community, and producing them if we can.
Currently, with support from Council, and particularly Councillors Tim Gard and Nathan Prior, we have the interest of State Government members, academics and business people. I anticipate various meetings and discussions in the near future, which hopefully will provide an indication of which way we should go. I’m looking forward to a non-partisan collaboration of all concerned – for the good of the community.
