Greenbelt
________________________________________________________________________________________
The City of Marion proposes a partnering approach with Government, private land owners and the community to establish a publicly accessible and vegetated Great Urban Southern Forest (GSUF) surrounding the suburbs of Hallett Cove, Sheidow Park and Trott Park. The City of Marion had the area labelled as the Greenbelt.
LATEST NEWS
In 2007 Council resolved to support in principle the establishment of the GSUF and to work with the State Government to further investigate funding and management arrangements to enable the establishment of the Great Southern Urban Forest.
TIMELINES
This is a long term project which involves all levels of Government, a number of different institutions and the private sector as well as the community.
BACKGROUND
The City of Marion with the Department for Environment and Heritage and Planning SA prepared a report for a Great Southern Urban Forest (pdf file - 600kb).
The GSUF is consistent with numerous State Government policies, including Yurrebilla, the Million Trees initiative and Naturelink. The GSUF complements reforms initiated by the State Government in relation to natural resource management.
The GSUF is based on a 15 to 20 years timeframe with a focus on:
- Future management being consistent with the Yurrebilla Management Framework
- Conservation and recreational opportunities of the existing publicly owned land
- Investigating the potential for privately owned land to be transferred to public ownership in the long term
- An interim strategy for the private land
- An implementation strategy
