Connector Road - Background
________________________________________________________________________________________

The City of Marion is proposing to construct a new Connector Road together with a shared path (Coast to Vines Rail Trail) on the former Marino to Willunga railway corridor.

The Connector Road will run from the junction of Gledsdale Rd and Quailo Ave to Lonsdale Road and then eastwards towards the junction of Lander Ave / Berrima Road. To complete this new road the junction of Lander Ave and Lander Rd will be upgraded with a roundabout.

In addition to the connection of the suburbs, the construction of the Connector Road aims to encourage the redevelopment of the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre to improve the level of services and facilities appropriate for a District Centre. This redevelopment is strongly supported by the local community.

Conservative estimates indicate that there will be 1.64 million kilometres of travel saved, directly associated with the new Connector Road. This will result in associated savings in vehicle costs of $246,000 per annum.

It is estimated that the aggregate reduction in vehicle kilometres described above will save some 665 tonnes per annum in carbon emissions.

At its meeting on 13 March 2007 Council approved the calling of tenders for construction of the road. It also adopted the Business Plan (pdf file - 2.2MB) for the Connector Road and entered into the funding deed with the private sector.

The tender process for the construction of the Connector Road is the culmination of the collective efforts of the City of Marion, Federal and State Governments and the private sector to secure the project. Built Environs was the preferred tenderer for Council after a competetive tender process.

Built Environs is a major South Australian construction firm that provides a comprehensive range of construction contracting services in the building and engineering spheres in the public and corporate sector. Formed in 1987, this major civil construction company has been involved in projects such as the Southern Expressway and Portrush Road upgrades, the Hindmarsh Island Bridge, Outer Harbour grain berth and the Common-User Facility ship lift project.

More Background

The Connector Road project was subject to extensive community consultation. A telephone survey of 501 households was conducted in 2003
(Results of the Telephone Survey – pdf file 191KB) and a number of public meetings were held.

Key objectives

  • Connect the suburbs of Hallett Cove, Trott Park and Sheidow Park;
  • Provide more direct vehicle access across the suburbs, including cyclists and pedestrians;
  • Create the conditions for the redevelopment of the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre which is estimated to generate 490 jobs.

Approach

The City of Marion has applied a methodical approach to the project by consulting extensively with the community and securing necessary support and funding.

A detailed design and costing process has been undertaken to be followed by a tender process for the construction of the road.
