Let's talk about Culture!
Let's talk about Culture!
Let's talk about Culture!

'Living Our Culture: The City of Marion Cultural Plan 2005 - 2010' is based in and attempts to express a collective vision of Marion’s cultural values, purposes and hopes.

It provides a direction for supporting and growing 'cultural vitality' in Marion. It also sets out an 'Action Plan' of priority actions to encourage local cultural and artistic expression. These are based on the following seven goals:

1. Culturally active and sustainable communities
2. Diversity is embraced and valued
3. A strong sense of local identity and belonging
4. Greater Conciliation and support for Aboriginal peoples
5. Creativity and artistic activity is fostered
6. Beautiful and vibrant environments
7. Our past is cherished

The Cultural Plan was developed throughout 2004, and is the result of many hundreds of conversations with the people of Marion.

As well as conducting workshops, forums and surveys, Council’s Arts and Cultural Development Team went ‘out and about' to streets, parks, shopping centres, community centres and other places where people get together to talk to people about culture. You may have seen us busy on our colourful ‘Conversation Couch’ in busy spots around Marion over this time.

Here are some of the things people said to us 'on the Conversation Couch' about Culture:
"Culture is the cohesive glue that keeps people together."
"Cultural events help me to stay hopeful about the human race."
"We’d be real sticks in the mud if we didn’t have other cultures around! It would be so boring! "
"It is important to keep up traditions, festivals and remember and be involved in cultural roots."
"Art is a key to culture, it is a record of culture"
"Being involved in the Arts – it keeps you sane! That’s my experience."
"Art completes an area, art in open space areas brings the city up to another level."
"Art is the food of the soul."

"I like this way of consulting. It’s personal, talking to us and having a proper conversation, really listening to what we think. It makes you think Council cares about us. Thanks for spending the time."
