Welcome to the City of Marion's Environmental Health Unit

The Environmental Health Unit is aimed at maintaining and promoting a high standard of public and environmental health within the community.

Council has four Environmental Health Officers. These Officers monitor standards in relation to food, public health, environmental protection and notifiable diseases (including immunisation).

Food Safety and Hygiene

Council's Environmental Health Officers routinely inspect all food premises to ensure compliance with the Food Act 2001 and the Food Regulations 2002. Complaints regarding food premises, food handling and food poisoning are investigated by this Unit.

For a copy of the Act and Regulations please visit the Department of Health Website http://www.dh.sa.gov.au/pehs/food-index.htm

If you have concerns about any of the following issues, please contact one of Council's Environmental Health Officers on 8375 6600 :

· the handling of food in a food business
· the cleanliness of a food business
· the sale of unsafe or unsuitable food (including contamination with foreign matter and food poisoning)

Public Health

Environmental Health Officers are authorised under the Public and Environmental Health Act 1987 and Regulations. This legislation covers a wide range of activities and conditions that can affect the health of the community. Such activities include insanitary conditions, infection control in hairdressers and beauty salons, swimming and spa pools, cooling towers, immunisation, mosquito control and head lice.

Environmental Protection

Stormwater is the rain water that flows across streets, gardens and roads into stormwater drains and gutters in the street. As a rule, only rain water that is clean and free of contaminants can enter the stormwater system. Examples of activities that can cause stormwater pollution:

  • Car washing
  • Concrete truck washing
  • Mud on roads
  • Oil spills
  • Brick cutters

Concerns regarding stormwater pollution should be referred to one of Council's Environmental Health Officers by telephoning 8375 6600.
