Exporting goods and services is a key factor influencing future economic growth of both Australia and South Australia. Businesses that pursue export markets can experience a range of benefits including:
- Increasing sales and profit
- Enhancing domestic competitiveness
- Reducing dependence on local markets
- Stabilising seasonal market fluctuations
- Gaining a global market share.
Once firms successfully enter export markets they can improve their competitive position through market diversification, improvement of processes and increases in quality standards.
According to the South Australian Export Council less than 2% of the State's businesses export and our exports need to grow at 12% pa if the State's export target of $25 billion by 2014 is to be reached. Therefore, there needs to be a focus on information and support services to local businesses to assist them in this process. The City of Marion works with the State Government's Office of Trade, the Inner Southern Business Enterprise Centre (ISBEC) and the existing export clubs to better deliver existing export support programs to Marion businesses.
In 2005, working in partnership with the cities of Marion and Onkaparinga, the State Government funded the establishment of the Regional Export and Investment Extension Service (REIES). This service is targeted at export-oriented companies and stage one (completed in 2005) identified approximately 70 businesses that needed export advice and assistance. An action plan was developed for each of these companies and hands-on support from a consultancy team is being provided to assist with the implementation of each plan.
