Immunisation Clinics for January 2008 – December 2008
A Healthy Community
Immunisation clinics are run by Marion Council at Wesfield Marion and the Hallett Cove Library for children up to 7 years of age.
The Council also supports immunisation services offered by local Medical Practitioners.
Council runs special catch up immunisation clinics for school students and adolescents who have missed vaccinations at school.
The Immunisation Schedule will assist you to understand what immunisations your child needs.
Immunisation Schedule
Birth
· Hepatitis B (given in hospital)
2 and 4 months
· Haemophilis Influenzae type B/ Hepatitis B
· Diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis/ Inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (injectable)
· Pneumococcal conjugate
. Oral Rotavirus
6 months
· Diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis/ Inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (injectable)
· Pneumococcal conjugate
. Oral Rotavirus
12 months
· Haemophilus influenza type b/ Hepatitis B
· Measles/mumps/rubella
· Meningococcal C
18 months
· Chicken Pox

School Catch-up Clinics
Council runs special immunisation clinics for school students and adolescents who have missed any of the following vaccinations at school:
Hepatitis B
Adult Diphtheria / Tetanus / Whooping Cough
Chicken Pox (2006 school program, year 8 only - up to the age of 13 years)
Gardasil- Human Papiloma Virus (HPV)
Meningococcal C

Possible reactions from vaccinations
Any injection may result in soreness, redness, itching, swelling or burning at an injection site for 1 to 2 days. Sometimes a small, hard lump may persist for some weeks or more. This is no cause for concern.
Diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis
- Usually mild and transient
- Within 24 hours
- Localised pain, redness and swelling at injection site
- Mild temperature (fever)
- An infant may be grizzly, unsettled and generally unhappy. This may persist for 24-48 hours
- Drowsiness
Haemophilus influenza type b
- Usually mild and transient
- Localised pain, swelling at injection site
- Mild fever
Measles, mumps, rubella
- Discomfort at injection site
- Usually mild and transient
The following may occur 5 to 12 days after vaccination
- Low grade temperature (fever)
- Faint rash (not infectious)
- Head cold/or runny nose
- Cough and/or puffy eyes
- Swelling of Salivary glands
Hepatitis B
- Very occasionally soreness, redness at the injection site
- Low grade fever
Inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine
- Muscle aches
- Localised pain, redness and swelling at injection site
- Low grade temperature (fever)
Meningococcal C
Common side effects include:
- Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Lack of appetite
- Headaches
Very Rare side effects include:
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
- Joint pain
- Rash
Pneumoccocal
Common side effects include:
- Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
- Fever
- Decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, restless sleep and irritability
Rare side effects include:
- Rash (hives or weavles)
Very rare side effects include:
- Seizures (convulsions) and hypotonic-hyporesponsiveness episodes (flat, floppy and unresponsive)
Chicken Pox
Common side effects include:
- Pain, redness and swelling at the injection site
- May develop symptoms of mild chicken pox several weeks after vaccination
Rare side effects include:
- Fever
- Lung problems
- Middle ear infections
Oral Poliomyelitis
- Occasional diarrhoea (no treatment usually needed but parent or carer must wash hands carefullly after changing nappies)
Influenza
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Muscle aches
- Localised pain, redness & swelling at injection site
- Occasionally injection site nodule- may last many weeks (no treatment is needed)
- Low grade temperature (fever)
Gardasil- Human Papiloma Virus (HPV)
- Minor Redness, pain, mild fever and swelling at the injection site
What to do
For mild reactions
- Give extra fluids to drink
- Do not overdress a baby if hot
- Give paracetamol to lower fever if needed. (Paracetamol should only be given in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions or after contacting your doctor.)
For redness or swelling apply cold compress.
Fever may occur. For pain and fever give paracetamol as directed on the packet and consult your doctor if fever persists.

If you’re concerned, and/or if reactions to immunisation are severe or persistent, please contact your doctor or hospital. Otherwise ring:

Please note: Recipients of a vaccine should remain in the vicinity of the clinic for about 15 minutes after vaccination. This is to ensure that they leave in good health and that they are not experiencing immediate adverse reactions.
