Introduction

The Mitchell Park Neighbourhood Centre is a local community resource. It is a place for people to meet and have coffee whilst participating in a program or taking part in one of the many other organised activities. We attempt to cater for all age groups, ranging from playgroups and art/craft to support groups. The centre promotes community inclusion and provides information and referral services.

Facilities

The Centre offers friendly staff and modern facilities including a hall for hire, meeting room, kitchen, fax machine, computers and photocopier. There is access for wheelchairs and facilities for those with disabilities. There are also nappy changing facilities for parents with babies, an outdoor pergola and barbecue area. Mitchell Park Neighbourhood Centre is also responsible for the Tonsley Hall on Bradley Grove. So if you are interested in hiring that hall for a party or event please contact the Centre on 8277 8435.

History

In early 1984 Mitchell Park Kindergarten approached the South Australian Housing Trust seeking accommodation for parental activities in their area. Their aim was to assist local families in socialising and to provide a venue for recreational, educational and health activities.
After consultation with residents and the organisations involved, a jointly funded building was erected, to be used as a neighbourhood centre, which is part of the Marion Council’s Community service section.
The Centre was officially opened on May 31st, 1987.

Funding

Sources of funds are varied -:
The Marion Council employs the Coordinator and Neighbourhood Centre Officer and assists with property costs.

The remainder of our funding is gained through grants, "fundraising" and through fees charged for various activities.
Current grants that the Centre has received are from :-

Department for Family & Community Services
Disability SA
Dept of Further Education, Employment, Science & Technology
Baptist Community Services Inc (BCS)
Home & Community Care (HACC)

We are always grateful for donations received from service clubs, businesses and individuals.

As a Neighbourhood Centre we try to provide a range of activities and services to cater for local community needs. If there is an activity or program you are interested in and it is not provided, just place your idea in the suggestion box located in the entrance area and we will do our best to provide it.

Volunteers

Mitchell Park Neighbourhood Centre is always seeking volunteers. The Centre needs volunteers to help with the Literacy program and General Handyman work. If interested please call the Centre on 8277 8435.
