Short Film Evening - Square Eyes Cafe
Monday 19 May 2008, 6.30pm.
Marion Cultural Centre Theatre, 287 Diagonal Rd, Oaklands Park.
Over past years, Square Eyes Community Media has run a number of community workshop programs. Facilitated by award winning videomaker and photographer, Ashley Starkey, workshops give the opportunity to create short film, from documentary through drama to stop motion to collage. Ashley has just concluded another round of workshops.
There are some interesting projects in the pipeline, with the completed works due to be screened at the Square Eyes Cafe. Everyone is welcome to come along and view these local creations while having a bite to eat from Signatures Cafe. Admission is by gold coin donation. If you are interested in any future workshops of this nature or attending short film events please contact Vassi on 8375 6891 or vac@marion.sa.gov.au

What is Square Eyes Community Media?
SQUARE EYES is an exciting development in community media allowing community access to media equipment and skills.
This includes a large community-access screen in the Marion Cultural Centre foyer area, just next to the café. The 2.5m x 1.8m screen gives artists and local people an opportunity to show off their videos, photos, digital art or other visual creations whenever the Cultural Centre is open.
Every 4 months the project also produces Square Eyes Café, a Friday evening of video, film, music and live performance in the Marion Cultural Centre foyer, provided by local new and emerging artists. It's a chance to meet up with friends, enjoy the evening's entertainment and support some 'home-grown' culture. It's also a great opportunity to get into the limelight, so pick up your guitar or your new video and come down to Square Eyes Café!
The evenings are organised by Square Eyes volunteers, and new members are always welcome. Please contact Vassi on 8375 6891 if you would like to submit work, perform or get involved with the group.
Who is SQUARE EYES for? Artists, film makers, photographers, digital artists, community groups, service groups, schools... anyone who wants to show their work or get involved in the project is welcome - young people are especially welcome to take this opportunity to learn skills and get involved.
How can you get involved?
If you have material that you would like to submit for the Square Eyes screen, please email or ring us as below. You can also join the Square Eyes Group - you don’t have to be an expert to join this group, just have an interest, enthusiasm and ongoing commitment!
As well as programming the screen, the project aims to support local people to create and edit material for Square Eyes. Members of the group can access video production and editing equipment, which can be borrowed for community purposes.
SQUARE EYES COMMUNITY MEDIA aims to:
- Provide creative expression of local identity and a sense of place in Marion
- Encourage a sense of community ownership of the Marion Cultural Centre
- Enable community access to multimedia equipment and skills development opportunities, especially for young people
- Include everyone in the community with an opportunity to engage with new and sophisticated technologies not usually accessible to communities
The Square Eyes project has been assisted by the Government of South Australia through Arts SA's Facilities and Equipment Program.
