Stormwater Pollution Prevention
________________________________________________________________________________________
The Marion and Mitcham Environmental Education Project (MMEEP) began in 1998 and came to an end on 30 June 2008. The project focused on the prevention of stormwater pollution across the Cities of Marion and Mitcham, with an officer employed at each Council. These positions were funded through cash contributions between the Adelaide and Mount Loft Ranges Natural Resources Management Board and the two Councils. The Project was aimed at promoting responsible environmental practices and assisting businesses to reach best practice standards.
A major thrust of the Project was to undertake site visits to priority business operations where stormwater pollution is typically an issue. These include automotive, manufacturing, engineering, retail, storage and transport, and the building and construction industries. The site visits used a combination of data collection and visual assessment to determine the levels of actual and potential stormwater pollution associated with a business' activities. This information was then used to provide the business with a clear direction along which to reduce its environmental impact. The vast majority of businesses across the region embraced this proactive approach and implemented the changes that were recommended.
The MMEEP also organised training courses and seminars. The seminars have been provided in conjunction with the EPA and other organisations and were aimed at business owners and managers. The project also provided Toolbox Training, which was conducted on-site and aimed at increasing the awareness of employees.
Benefits of MMEEP to participating business have been:
- Reduced environmental impact
- Greater business efficiency and profitability
- Clean work environment
- Compliance with relevant legislation
- Improved public image.
