Who volunteers?

In 2004, 6.3 million Australians over the age of 18 years were active volunteers. (Giving Australia, 2005)

Approximately 836 million hours were volunteered by adult Australians in 2004, with each volunteer donating on average 132 hours of their time. (Giving Australia, 2005)

The largest number of hours on average were contributed by older and younger volunteers - 178 hours for the year by those aged 55-65 and 132 hours for those aged 18-24. (Giving Australia, 2005)

In 2004, 41% of adult Australians volunteered (Giving Australia, 2005) compared with 34% in 2002 and 24% in 1995 (ABS 2003).

The most active age group of volunteers is 35-44 years (47%). (Giving Australia, 2005)

What do volunteers do?

The most common volunteering activities are fundraising (56%), management (45%), teaching (44%) and administration (41%). (ABS 2001)

People tend to choose volunteer activity that reflects their paid employment. Professionals teach (65%) and trades people choose maintenance, repairs and gardening work (47%). (ABS 2001)

Why do people volunteer?

Reasons for volunteering include being of service to the community (47%) and personal satisfaction (43%). (ABS 2001)

Young people aged 18-24 volunteered for personal satisfaction (40%) and to help others in the community (40%), to gain new skills (13%) and gain work experience (17%). (ABS 2001)
