Warradale Shopping Precinct - Background
________________________________________________________________________________________

The City of Marion supports the investigation into traffic solutions for the Warradale Shopping Precinct, to be undertaken by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI).

Shown above are two road improvement options which could be investigated to improve traffic movements at the Warradale Shopping Precinct and adjacent Oaklands rail crossing. They involve widening Prunus Street (on its southern side) and Diagonal Road (on its eastern side) as well as a potential closure of Morphett Road at its intersection with Diagonal Road

In 2004 Council secured funding from Planning SA’s People for Places programme to fund an urban design study into potential design improvements at the Warradale Shopping Precinct. The development of the urban design study needed to resolve potential road improvements in the precinct and in October 2004 two public meetings were held with the community and businesses. At the meetings residents and business owners were shown two potential options for road improvements that had been generated after discussions with the then Office of Transport Planning.

The two options comprised Option 1 (picture above on the left) where Prunus Street was widened on its southern side and Diagonal Road was widened on its eastern side with Morphett Road closed at the junction with Diagonal Road.

Option 2 (picture above on the right) involved creating a one way ‘round about’ system with Prunus Street being one way for east bound traffic; Morphett Road (between Prunus and Diagonal Road) being one way for south bound traffic; and Diagonal Road (between the rail line and Prunus Street) being one way for north bound traffic.

Key objectives

Facilitate improved access and infrastructure to the Warradale Shopping Precinct.

Approach

The City of Marion has the role of working with the communty and the State Government to facilitate the project. The implementation of a final traffic solution would be the responsibility of the State Government.
