Coastal Walkway Redevelopment

In 2019, Council endorsed a $4.88 million Coastal Walkway plan to re-open the gullies and extend the walkway to Field River mouth. State Government has provided $2.44 million towards the project cost. In December 2022, the Bridge design elements were finalised and endorsed by Council, including an increased project budget, with construction works commencing in February 2023. Works are expected to be completed early 2024.

MILESTONES

November 2019 - Council endorse $4.8 million Coastal Walkway plan to re-open gullies and extend the walkway to Field River mouth.

April 2020 - Council receives State Government funding of $2.4 million.

August 2020 - Pre-Design Community Engagement held at Cove Civic Center and online engagement open until 4 September 2020.

October 2020 - Phase 1 - Feasibility of options / Survey / Geo technical / Environmental / Cultural / Technical / Cost review / Community Notification on Design option/s.

November 2020 - Council Report to endorse Design.

December 2020 - Phase 2 - Detailed Design Development and commence construction / Develop Detailed Design / Civil - Structural Design / Technical review / Approvals / Develop construction technical briefs for Tender / Commence construction.

June 2022 - Construction works complete and open to the community.

September 2022 - Council experienced procurement delays with key materials required for the Grey Road Gully and Kurnabinna Gully suspension bridges.

December 2022 - Council considered in confidence construction details relating to the building of the Coastal Walkway bridges. The Bridge design elements have been finalised, with site mobilisation to commence early 2023. Council staff undertook a letterbox drop and door knocked local residents. Information included the Fryer Street Reserve being used as a temporary construction compound.

January 2023 - Council worked through the approval process for the site compound location at Fryer Street Reserve. The Council Assessment Panel approved the site compound on 15 February 2023.

February 2023 - Works commenced late February, starting with the construction of the site compound at Fryer Street Reserve. For further information read the Start of Works Notice.
