Sam Willoughby BMX Facility

The State Government and the Cities of Marion and Onkaparinga have committed funding towards the development for a $5.8 million Union Cycliste Internationale track in Southern Adelaide

The new facility will contain:

  • Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) track with 5 metre and 8 metre start hills
  • Clubroom and associated car parking
  • Provision for a future pump track

In June 2016, the State Government committed $2 million towards a UCI facility in Southern Adelaide with the Cities of Marion and Onkaparinga contributing $750,000 each.

Since 2016, the City of Marion has been working in collaboration with the State Government, City of Onkaparinga and the Clubs to identify a feasible location for the new facility.

Over the last two years, the State Government and the City of Marion have increased their funding commitments to $3.3 million and $1.75 million respectively to allow the project to proceed.

On 10 March 2020, Council approved the Prudential Report as required under Section 48 of the Local Government Act 1999 for the project to proceed to detailed design at the Majors Road site.

What Clubs are moving to the new Facility?

  • The new facility will become home to The Cove BMX and Happy Valley BMX Clubs whilst becoming a facility for elite riders. It will also will have key linkages

The Happy Valley and The Cove BMX clubs are relocating to the Sam Willoughby BMX Facility

When will construction commence?

  • Construction is due to commence in November 2020 and will take approximately 9 months

What about the reactive soils?

  • Approximately 14,000 tonnes of reactive soil will be removed to make way for the new track

How will the new facility link to Glenthorne National Park?

  • The City of Marion and the Department of Environment and Water have continued to work together to ensure that the new development is in keeping with the vision for the National Park
