Stage 3 of the ‘Flinders Greenway’ walking and cycling link between Flinders University and the Marino Rocks Greenway at Ascot Park is being designed and the City of Marion is inviting the community to have their say on the concept plans.

The Flinders Greenway is a major walking and cycling route linking major economic hubs in the south including Flinders University and the Tonsley Innovation District.

The first stage between Sturt Road and Alawoona Avenue was finished in 2021 as a partnership between the City of Marion, Renewal SA and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.

Stage 2 connecting Alawoona Avenue to Cohen Court Reserve is being built over the next two years in collaboration with the residential developer of the Tonsley Village, Peet.

Stage 3 is proposed to stretch from Cohen Court in Tonsley to Adelaide Terrace in Ascot Park where it will link in with the Marino Rocks Greenway which, in turn, connects through to the Central Business District of Adelaide.

The proposed 2.4 km route will traverse multiple roads and connections.

The City of Marion is asking the community for their feedback on the route design at each road and intersection.

These roads and connections include Cohen Court, Windsor Avenue, the Celtic Avenue/Windsor Avenue intersection, English Avenue, the English Avenue/Percy Avenue Intersection, Percy Avenue, West Street, and Adelaide Terrace where it connects with the Marino Rocks Greenway.

The design of Stage 3 will consider planned upgrades to the Cohen Court Reserve and explore appropriate traffic control devices and directional signage to community facilities such as the Mitchell Park Railway Station and the Mitchell Park Sport and Community Centre.

“Council provides cycling and walking paths because they encourage exercise; and they reduce traffic congestion and pollution,” Mayor of Marion Kris Hanna said.

“It would obviously be a good idea to have a bike path connecting the city to Flinders Uni via the Tonsley business and residential precinct.

“We want to know what people think of the concept designs to link Cohen Court, Tonsley, to Adelaide Terrace, Ascot Park.”
