When the pandemic hit earlier this year and forced all libraries into lockdown, Library Lifelong Learning Coordinator Ben Teoh knew he needed to react swiftly to create an online option for kids who were used to attending after school STEM based programming in the library.
"When schools and libraries in South Australia closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions," Ben said, "we saw a lot of parents asking questions about kids' screen time and educational content. We wanted to create something that would make it easier for parents and kids to find people doing interesting things online, be creative at home and also engage in digital technology in a fun and educational way." And so Bricks N Bytes was born.
The show started as a Facebook Live Stream video every Monday afternoon that kids could join and interact live with the hosts, Ben and Emma. It is aimed at kids who love science, digital technology and LEGO. The Bricks N Bytes format includes a weekly special guest with a focus on STEM, a Creator Challenge which encourages kids to stretch their LEGO building skills and an educational app of the week.
The show still streams live on Facebook on Mondays but now there is a viewing option for non Facebook users. Channel 44 reached out to the library to offer after school and weekend spots for the kids show.
"Channel 44 have also been adapting to changes in the community broadcasting sector and have been looking to increase their digital programming," Ben said. "Bricks N Bytes was a great fit as a community focused program with a format that targeted at a younger audience."
