Bus shelters

Requests for new bus shelters

Due to the Federal Government's Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Guidelines 2002 Council has established an annual program to upgrade all bus stops throughout the entire city as part of its Capital Works Budget.

Due to substantial costs involved, it may not be able to provide a shelter at a particular location immediately.

In order to assess a request for a new shelter, Council will require the following information:

  • Proposed location (preferably street name / bus stop number).
  • What side of the road (e.g. East side).

A Council staff member will visit the proposed location and carry out an assessment, liaising with relevant service authorities as necessary.

A number of factors will be taken into consideration including potential personal safety issues such as lighting requirements, proximity of adjacent structures or bushes.

The person requesting the shelter will be advised either by telephone or in writing of the outcome of the investigation.

Relocating bus shelters

A bus shelter is a component of the bus stop which must be accessible by all users as per the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Guidelines 2002, therefore it is unlikely that it can be moved independently of the bus stop.

If you would like a specific bus stop assessed or want to discuss this situation, please contact Council’s Technical Officer – Traffic & Design, Nathan Saxty, on 7420 6453
