Hard waste collections and Tip Ticket

Households can book up to two free hard waste collections per financial year. The City of Marion will collect a maximum of one cubic metre of material per booking. One cubic metre is equivalent to:

One three-seater sofa
or
Two white goods
or
One 6ft x 4ft trailer-load of waste (without cage)

Hard waste and mattress collections must be booked separately.

City of Marion residents can now simply login to the My Marion Customer Portal to book a hard waste pick up or register for a tip ticket.

You can track your request, check how many eligible pickups you have remaining, and by logging into My Marion the booking process is much quicker and easier.

Excess or unacceptable material will not be collected and residents must remove it from the kerbside. Failure to do this may result in a $210 fine.

Please note that the City of Marion does not collect commercial hard waste from businesses. Businesses will need to make their own arrangements, possibly with a commercial contractor.

Tip Tickets: Don't want to wait for a collection?

If you don't want to wait for a hard waste collection, try using a Tip Ticket.

A Tip Ticket replaces one of your annual hard waste collections and entitles you to take one cubic metres worth of materials to a selected transfer station in Lonsdale for FREE at a time that suits you.

Items not accepted for hard waste collections such as bulk green waste or renovation material may be acceptable at the transfer station through mutual agreement.

Items acceptable for general hard waste collection
  • Household white goods (eg. Fridges, washing machines, stoves. For safety reasons, fridge doors must be removed).
  • Household furniture (eg. Cupboards, tables, chairs).
  • Bed base/frame.
  • Scrap metal (small in size, free-standing swings etc. must be dismantled)
  • Floor coverings/carpets, rolled up and securely tied (maximum 1.5 metres long and 30cm diameter).
  • Household appliances.
  • Tools.
  • Hot water services.
  • Small piles of wood (bundled).
  • Lawn mowers.
  • Air conditioners.
Mattress and/or Ensemble Base

Mattress and/or ensemble base need to be booked in a separate collection (max 2 items per collection).

Items not accepted
  • Glass (eg. window, tabletop, mirror)
  • Paint or liquid waste.
  • Household rubbish, recycling and organic material (e.g. cardboard, green waste - should be disposed to the red, yellow or green-lidded bins).
  • Tyres, batteries, car bodies or parts.
  • Gas cylinders.
  • Building materials from the erection, demolition or renovation of a property.
  • Hard waste exceeding 1 cubic metre.
  • Building waste (bricks, concrete, pallets, tiles, asbestos etc).
  • Water tanks and other large items.
  • Computers, monitors or televisions.
  • Hazardous products, toxic substances, explosives or ammunition.
  • Any item which may endanger the collection personnel (e.g. fuel and other combustible items)
Placement of items for collection

Items must not be put out until the Sunday prior to collection.

Place the item/s to be collected on the 'verge' section of the footpath (the area between the fence line and the kerb) in a neat and orderly manner, taking special care not to obstruct access to pedestrians.

Note: Collection staff will not come onto private property to remove hard waste items under any circumstances. It is the responsibility of the resident to place the items on the verge.

If items are placed out in bags and/or boxes, they must be secure enough that they will not break open when either lifted or affected by rain, etc. All items for collection must be able to be easily lifted by one person.

Please note the special requirements for some items (e.g. fridges need to have the door/s removed, wood needs to be tied into bundles) as outlined above in the list of items accepted.

Booking procedure

At the time of booking, the resident will be advised of the date of the next available collection period. This will be confirmed by email or SMS once the booking is confirmed and will including a link for details of hard waste collection guidelines such as permissible items for collection, packaging requirements, etc.

In addition, a 'Pre Booked Hard Waste Collection' a PDF notice will be provided to be placed on the hard waste collection. This notice identifies the collection as pre-booked.

The City of Marion will need the following information for booking a collection:

  • Nature of the items to be collected (to ensure they fall within the City of Marion guidelines outlined above)
  • The name, address and a daytime contact telephone number of the person making the request.
  • Location of the collection point if not at the above address (eg. booking for another location or person).

If a collection is urgent, please let us know at the time of booking and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Booking a double collection

City of Marion residents are entitled to TWO free hard collections per financial year. If you anticipate that the amount of hard waste that you put out for collection will exceed one cubic metre, or you have a combination of items for collection (e.g. one cubic metre of household items, plus a fridge) you need to book two collections (total amount must not exceed two cubic metres).

To book two separate collections, use the online booking form to make two separate bookings, or call 8375 6600 to speak with our customer service team.

If you’re unsure about the allowable collection sizes, please call 8375 6600 to speak with our customer service team.
