Youth in Marion

The City of Marion is committed to working with young people and the community to make the region a positive and inclusive place for young people to live, work, play and connect.

We celebrate diversity and individually and ensure all projects, events, grants and partnerships are inclusive for all young people including people of various gender, age, sexuality, cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs and those living with disability.

The City of Marion has an official Youth Collective Committee (YCC), that aims to bridge the gap between council and young people, organise youth led projects and initiatives, and provide positive outcomes for young people. You can stay up to date with what the YCC is up to through our channels.

Marion Battle of the Bands

This year, we Amped it Up for Battle of the Bands!

Over two EPIC days, we heard from the best local talent Marion has to offer! This multi-day event split into two categories, with bands competing for a life-changing prize - a mentoring and recording package from Island Recording Studios, that will culminate in the release of their amazing singles!

On Saturday we had the iconic Choosing Sides - They are an explosive indie-rock music band from Adelaide/Kaurna Land. Hailing from the south coast of Adelaide, Choosing Sides are one of the most energetic and contagiously fun young acts to recently emerge on the Australian indie-rock scene!

On Sunday we were treated to an incredible performance from The Empty Threats. Winners of the 2023 National Music Awards BEST LIVE ACT, The Empty Threats are an energetic / eccentric 5-piece punk/noise rock band from Kaurna Land / Adelaide in South Australia. With a perfect blend of influences from across many genres and a captivating and unique live performance, the band is a cornerstone live act amongst the Adelaide Music community.

This event also featured some incredible markets from Young Hearts Pop up Markets within the Marion Cultural Centre Plaza. With over 40 young stallholders aged 5 to 25, a chillout zone, live solo acoustic performances, and a sensory safe space.

While there may only be two winners per category, every band that was involved deserves a large applause for their incredible performances!

On Saturday, open based band Exit Plan won First Prize, with MÄNTRÄ coming a close second!

Sunday saw school-based band Sol Collective steal First Prize, with the iconic BROKEN-42 taking second!

Safe Space Project Report 2022 - 2026

Screenshot 2023 06 22 094714

The Safe Space Project heard from young people in the City of Marion about mental health and wellbeing, and what helps them to feel safe. This project was lead by the City of Marion Youth Collective Committee in partnership with CCYP and headspace.

This report outlines the importance of mental health support tailored for young people, and the need for this in the community. The report also showcases how informed young people are, and that they have the ideas to create solutions targeted for their community.

It hopes to provide insight into how keyed-in and knowledgeable young people are about things that affect them, and that they have the solutions. The report showcases youth-led ideas and hopes to demonstrate to council needs that must be addressed to support youth mental health and wellbeing in the City of Marion.
