Meet Dr Rodrigo Praino & Dr Catherine Attard of Tall Poppy Campaign, Australian Institute of Policy & Science.

Dr Rodrigo Praino 'Voting in the 21st Century: candidate attractiveness, scandals, and decision-making shortcuts':

Voters in advanced democracies have become less and less informed about politics. This trend enhances the importance of shortcuts that reduce the costs associated with the decision-making process of voters. Traditional shortcuts, such as party affiliation and ideology, however, have clearly become less important in the meantime. Instead, voters seem to look elsewhere, searching for even ‘cheaper’ shortcuts that help them decide whom to vote for. We will have a close look at some of these shortcuts, including the physical attractiveness of candidates running for office and their involvement in scandals.

Dr Catherine Attard 'Decoding DNA to save our wildlife':

DNA is the basis of all life. It contains a wealth of information that I can be used to identify you, your relatives, and the species to which you belong. This is done by comparing similarities and differences in DNA sequences among individuals, populations and species, and reading leftover imprints of past events that are still held in the DNA of living individuals. In this talk, we will glimpse into how this DNA information from wildlife is being used to answer key questions in ecology and evolution to help save our dramatically dwindling natural world. This includes real world examples from small, endangered freshwater fish in the Murray-Darling river system to the largest animal on the planet - the blue whale.
