Just Write - for kids

We are pleased to bring back our popular short story competition Just Write – for Kids, in the summer holidays. Just the thing to encourage and inspire budding authors while also challenging them to improve their writing skills.

Entry is FREE and includes two age categories: 8–10 years and 11–13 years. It is open to children who are either members of the SA Public Library network themselves or have a parent/caregiver who is a member. We welcome all genres of stories and all levels of experience.

Competition opens: Monday 19 December, 2022

Competition closes: Friday 20 January, 2023


1st Prize in each age category: Headphones + Book voucher (valued at $200)

2nd Prize in each age category: Book voucher + Movie voucher (valued at $100)

Conditions of entry

  • To be eligible, entries must be an original story with a word count of: 300–750 words (for contestants 8–10 years) and 500–1000 words (for contestants 11–13 years).
  • Entries must be in English.
  • One entry per child.
  • The author’s name must not appear on the story or in the title.
  • Please save the file as the title of the story.
  • Entries should be in a Microsoft Word document (.doc/.docx), size 12 font, double spaced, single sided.

For handwritten entries, please submit your story to any Marion Library branch with a paper entry form attached. Paper entry forms are available at the library.
