Work starts on $1.3M upgrade to Boatshed Café at Hallett Cove

The City of Marion has started work on a $1.3 million upgrade to the popular Boatshed Café at Hallett Cove.

The café business has moved its business upstairs while Council, which owns the property, begins installing new disability access amenities on the first floor of the building including wider doors, an access ramp and a lift to the second floor.

The works will also include the construction of a new dining space on the northern side of the building and a new access door to the southern side of the building.

The life of the building will also be extended through the enhancement of external cladding to coastal environment-friendly materials.

If the construction schedule allows, the Boatshed Café will remain open throughout work, including the takeaway kiosk. The café will communicate its opening arrangements through its social media channels.

The business relocated upstairs in the Sugarloaf area on June 14 whilst the lower café area is being renovated.

Access will be from the path at the end of the roundabout on Heron Way.

The café will relocate downstairs when construction on the second storey begins later this year.

The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2024.

The café toilets are in the construction zone and cannot be accessed during building works.

Patrons are advised to use the closest public toilet which is 320m away at Heron Way Reserve.

The lower café car park will be closed during construction, which will generally occur Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.

Depending on the schedule of work, some parking may be available on weekends

Access to the Coastal Walkway will remain open throughout the project.

The Boatshed Café building was once a surf lifesaving club.

The City of Marion upgraded the building into a commercial business and issued the initial lease for the café in December 2007.
