Automated External Defibrillators

Community groups and sporting clubs should consider first aid provisions offered in their facilities including having an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) available.

The City of Marion acknowledges the advantage of having easy access to AEDs wherever large groups of people gather, especially community venues where there are large numbers of members of the public or where there is a risk of electrocution, like swimming pools.

What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)?

AEDs provide first aid treatment for life-threatening instances of cardiac arrest. The AED assesses a patient’s medical situation and then delivers a measured electrical shock to restore the normal effective cardiac rhythm, if required.

They are relatively simple to use, however, should ideally be used by someone who is appropriately trained.

Does our sporting club/community group need a defibrillator?

According to the Work Health and Safety Act (SA) 2012, community groups and sporting clubs may be classified as "a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU)", which obligates them to consider and provide first aid provisions to their communities.

Sporting clubs and community groups are encouraged to be familiar with the Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace which provides information on how to use a risk management approach to assess:

  • The nature of the work and the workplace hazards.
  • The size and location of the workplace to assess the response times for emergency services.

Undertaking the above assessment will assist community groups and sporting clubs to tailor the first aid resources that are appropriate for their facility.
