Marion Council will not increase rates to cover the rise in the State Government’s Solid Waste Levy.

Last night Council chose to absorb the $404,000 levy increase through savings in our 2019/20 budget rather than burden households with higher rates.

The average residential rate increase will remain the same as last year at 1.8 per cent – an historical low.

Households can help reduce the impact Council – and ultimately ratepayers – pays for the solid waste levy by ensuring they place their rubbish in the appropriate bin. This will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Council currently pays a $100 per tonne levy for waste going to landfill, which will increase to $140 per tonne from January next year.
