Lobby groups frequently call on Council to broadcast support for political and social causes. Quite often I agree with them.
My view, however, is that local government is not really here to be a platform for social activism. A council’s primary role is to provide facilities and services that support our residents and businesses. We should stick to the business of local government, and do it well.
There is a practical reason to refer political lobbying to the State and Federal levels of government. Your local Elected Members already spent 3 hours nearly every Tuesday night just discussing local issues. If we became a debating society to address the evils of the world, we would never get anything done!
