A Citizenship Ceremony is a special event during which citizenship candidates take the pledge of allegiance to Australia and are officially pronounced Australian Citizens.
Receiving Australian Citizenship is often an emotional experience for candidates, therefore the City of Marion aims to create a relaxed and joyful atmosphere to celebrate this special milestone.
City of Marion hosts approximately five ceremonies per year at the Marion Cultural Centre, the Council’s civic centre, or at the Tonsley Innovation District.
The Australian Citizenship Ceremony is a formal occasion which takes approximately one to two hours.
It consists of 50-70 candidates plus friends and family who are invited to attend.
During the ceremony candidates are asked to make the Pledge of Commitment. This pledge has to be recited in the English language (words available at the ceremony) in order to receive the Certificate of Australian Citizenship.
Members of Parliament, Councillors and special guests are invited to attend, with light refreshments being served after the ceremony.
Children receive their own certificate however are not required to take the pledge if they are under the age of 16.
